Liverpool FC website made an announcement yesterday saying that Spanish striker Fernando Torres has decided to undergo knee surgery and will be out for the rest of the season. The operation will take place in Barcelona and Torres will be unable to play for at least six weeks. This means that his season with Liverpool is basically over, but if everything goes well he will be ready for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Fernando Torres has already scored 22 goals this season for his team, but now will miss the remaining Premier League games as well as the Europa League semi-final. Torres was injured in the exact same spot in January, and now it seems that he has not fully recovered from that incident. Some Liverpool fans rushed in to comment that the player is being selfish, only thinking about the 2010 World Cup and not the domestic season with his club.
The striker insist there was no other option: “We went through all possibilities before making this decision. The doctors and myself thought that surgery was the best option at this point. I was injured in the second minute of the game (against Benfica) but went on to play 85 minutes total. If I was just thinking about the World Cup I would have asked for a substitution right away. Yes I’ve been waiting four years for this, and I’m confident I will be ready on time. We are starting recovery today.”
