Fernando Torres is currently following a special six-hour daily training session, hoping to recover from his recent operation on time for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. According to Spain’s head doctor, Torres is now running against time to be ready for the opening game of Spain versus Switzerland on June 16.
“Right now we cannot tell for sure if Fernando will be ready to play in the opening game against Switzerland, but we are staying optimistic. He has already started working in the field, and with enough training and gym time he should be ready on time. His knee operation is still fresh, so it’s really to soon to start making predictions.”
Spain’s head coach Vicente del Bosque has included the name of Fernando Torres in his initial team selection that was announced earlier this week. Many experts believe that Torres should have been left out though, and that is definitely better to have another player that is 100% ready instead of a superstar that will not be able to help his team at all during the upcoming World Cup.
According to the official World Cup rules, a team is allowed to switch a player that is injured up until a day before the opening game (the deadline for Spain is on June 15). If Fernando Torres shows no signs of improvement del Bosque has the opportunity to leave him behind at the very last moment. His preliminary squad selection for the 2010 World Cup has a total of 30 players when Spain only needs 23 by June 1st. But that includes just 5 strikers, so most likely Torres will come to South Africa either way, even if he is not ready for the opening game Spain will definitely need him later on. But will the player be 100% ready?
