We continue our special report on the best World Cup 2010 players with the first half of the Spanish offensive front-line Mr. Fernando Torres of Liverpool. Torres along side David Villa have been voted from FIFA fans as the best offensive duo that is coming to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, successfully leading Spain as the biggest favourite on the way to winning their first World Cup trophy. Together they have already scored more than 40 times this season with their teams, being by far the most productive offence of the World Cup finals.
Fernando Torres started his professional career playing for Atlético Madrid, and as one of the youngest football players in the Spanish league Torres scored 82 goals earning the nickname El Niño (which means the Kid in Spanish). After the end of the 2006-2007 season Torres requested and was transferred to Liverpool, completing the most expensive player purchase in the history of the club. But it was money well spent and Fernando Torres also became just the second player to score more than 20 goals for Liverpool in a single season, and the fastest ever to reach 50 goals all together for his club.
Fernando Torres international career has also been exceptional so far, and there is definitely no better time to be playing for Spain than right now. The Spanish national team traditionally chokes on big competitions, only winning a European championship in 1964 when hosting the tournament. But the tables have turned and in the last few years Spain has reached the top of the FIFA Rankings for the first time in history, won another European Championship in 2008 (with Torres scoring the winning goal), and are on their way to grab World Cup gold in South Africa.
Spain has qualified 12 times for the World Cup competition and is the only nation that has never won the trophy while being first in the official rankings. But Fernando Torres and his team mates are confident that things are about to change. Spain has been on an impressive run and was undefeated for 35 matches in a row since 2007 - a world record. They were the first team to successfully qualify to the 2010 World Cup, while being the only nation to have 10 victories in 10 games during the group stage.
Fernando Torres is leading his country from a safe path, and even though he is not the most productive player of the team, he almost always scores on the most important games like the winning goal against Germany on the Euro 2008 final, that gave Spain their first major title after over 40 years. And this is exactly what his team is expecting from Torres in South Africa, to score as many goals as possible especially on big matches. Together with his partner in crime they can destroy any defence if given the chance, and while Spain is definitely the most complete team of the 2010 World Cup tournament, having Fernando Torres on a good day is what essentially makes them unstoppable.
