Game day number two for Group D is kicking off with the really important game between Germany and Serbia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on June 18 2010. The German team is one of the absolute favourites to win the World Cup trophy, and will be most likely coming to this game already having 3 points secured from their previous match. Serbia on the other hand could be with their back against the wall, depending of course on the result of game one against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Something really important to take into consideration is the fact that Australia and Ghana will be playing against each other one day later (June 19), therefore today’s opponents do not have the luxury of knowing the result in advance and having a more clear picture of the group standings. Because if both Germany and Serbia are coming to Port Elizabeth victorious, a nice draw will definitely be convenient for everybody (combined with a similar result on the other game), practically securing the top qualifying spots for the two opponents. But that’s not really the case today.

The other problem is that Germany always plays to win, in fact the Germans only know how to play with one particular style. Efficient, well read, without necessarily being creative is always how the team goes out and about. Like a well-oiled machine that keeps repeating the same play over and over again until it finally works. Serbia will definitely have a lot of work to do against Germany, but since their only goal is to go past the group stage in South Africa a victory today is not really something they are counting on. An unexpected win will be welcomed of course, and if they have room to impose their strategy anything could happen. Serbia finished first in the qualifying round after an impressive run, leaving France in second place and to the play-off matches. Even though they recently lost a huge pool of talented players coming from Montenegro, the team is as good as always and if all goes well they should be able to go past the group stage easily.

For the record the last game between Germany and Serbia was a friendly match on May 31 2008, and the Germans won by 2 goals to 1. Most likely something similar will also go down in South Africa, a tough and interesting game with Germany getting the 3 points and advancing early to the round of 16.
