Germany lost a great chance for another World Cup trophy in 2006 when hosting the tournament finals, but now the team is back with a vengeance starting the group stage games against ambitious Australia. In theory this should be an easy afternoon for the Germans, but the opening games are always tricky even for the most experienced teams of the tournament. If Australia can catch them off guard they will score some really precious points for the rest of the competition.

Germany is without doubt one of the most successful teams in the World Cup history with a total of three trophies (last one in 1990). They have also reached the final another four times, and finished in 3rd place three more times, making Germany one of the most consistent football teams of the tournament. Coming to South Africa will be no different, Germany’s goal is to bring back home the 2010 World Cup once again or at least to make a good run worthy of their name and history.

Australia on the other hand is an upcoming team in the world football stage appearing for only the third time in a World Cup. They had a great qualifying season finishing first in their group without losing a single game. The team’s strong defence only allowed one goal in the whole tournament and they would like to keep it that way in South Africa. But it probably is against them the fact they are going against the toughest team of the Group for the first game, since they will most likely have to play catch up in the remaining two matches. Unless Australia is able to steal some points from Germany they will not be allowed to make any more mistakes for the rest of the group stage if they want to advance to the next round. Seems like an impossible task for the socceroos but this is the World Cup and much worse teams have gone a lot further with lady luck and a few good games on their side.
