The government of Brazil announced today their plans to spend over 900 billion dollars to prepare for the 2014 World Cup finals as well as the 2016 Olympic games. The money will be injected in various Brazilian cities, upgrading existing infrastructure such as roads, airports and train stations. Following previous World Cup competitions in other nations Brazil is spreading the different games in various states all over the country, and a lot of city councils have already contacted the appropriate authorities to request funding.
The 12 Brazilian cities hosting games in 2014 are Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Brasília, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Natal and Recife. All existing stadiums will go through upgrades and expansions, and in many cases new stadiums are being built all together to accommodate the World Cup matches. Just the construction and renovations of the Brazilian stadiums is expected to cost over 2 billion dollars, but the Brazilians are already almost certain this is money well spent.
This will be the second time Brazil is hosting a World Cup tournament after 1950, becoming just the 5th nation in history to be a host twice, and the last time the finals came to South America was in 1978. This will also be the first time Brazil is hosting the Olympic games and Rio De Janeiro is the first South American city to host the prestigious event. But Brazil has a long history of successfully preparing major sporting events and their experience will definitely help the country to make the most out of it in terms of profits. It is already estimated that the 2014 World Cup will be the most profitable in the history of the event, surpassing by far Germany in 2006.
