South Africa to make Olympic bid?

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa opened the appetite for the host nation that now is considering to place an Olympic bid for either 2020 or 2024. These rumours are coming directly from some of the key executives of the 2010 World Cup, saying that if the football tournament proves to be a success the country could start preparing for an official bid of the summer Olympic Games. Brazil and Rio de Janeiro will become the first city from South America to host the Olympic Games in 2016, something that definitely opens the possibilities for the African nation.

These surprising news come after recent talks of many unsold tickets, rising unemployment and crime rates, and of course concerns that some World Cup stadiums are not even ready yet for the tournament. Of course the officials spreading the Olympic bid rumours forgot to mention all these problems, but at least they insisted that the only way to go forward with this is if the World Cup competition is successful in all levels. We all hope that the tournament will go on smoothly without any unexpected events, but to already be discussing Olympic games is a little bit unrealistic. Maybe they just wanted to create some South Africa buzz on the eve of their biggest event ever, and I guess since I’m writing about it looks like it’s working.
