Brazil is the largest country in South America, and fifth largest in the world. It has a large population of almost 200 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in the world (fifth overall). Brazil is the only country in the Americas that speaks Portuguese which is the official language. Originally a colony of Portugal, it got its independence in the 1800′s. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia, but the largest city is Sao Paulo with over 10 million inhabitants, and Rio de Janeiro with almost 7 million people comes second. Brazil is definitely the most successful national football team in the history of the World Cup with five championships and numerous appearances and finals. Brazil is starting the tournament in Group G, probably the toughest group of the finals, and competing against Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea.
