The second and most important game of the first day for Group H is between World Cup favourite Spain versus Switzerland. The Spaniards are on an amazing winning streak being virtually undefeated since 2006 with the exception of a single loss to the United States in the Confederation Cup last summer. The team knows that they simply cannot afford to make any more mistakes like that one, but continue to play the best football in the world and all the way to their first World Cup championship. And this is exactly how they managed to win the Euro 2008 by being focused 24/7 and not losing a single game for months. Spain is the only national team that has never won a World Cup when being on top of the official FIFA rankings, something they plan to change for ever in South Africa.
Switzerland is also not to be taken lightly though and their number one goal is to take Spain under surprise in the first game of the group stage. Gaining points in this match up will give Switzerland a great advantage and possibly one of the two qualifying positions of Group H. The Swiss have participated already nine times in the World Cup tournament, so they are definitely not lacking the experience. Having just a little bit of luck on their side too and a lot of damage can be made. Their style of football is very different than the rest of the group’s teams, and this can work in their advantage if they manage to establish early their game.
The road to the World Cup final will be long for Spain, and right after the group phase they are going head first against either Brazil or Portugal with both countries looking to go all the way. At this level of competition who is your next opponent does not really matter that much, especially when your only goal is to win the tournament you know that you have to beat everybody that crosses your path. The players seem ready to write another golden page in the team’s history, the most important one so far, because no one knows when the next opportunity will arise.
