The injury list keeps getting bigger and bigger today, and Mikel Obi of Nigeria is the latest addition to the bunch. At least this injury is not really a new one, Mikel Obi has been injured throughout the entire season and had only played very few games with Chelsea. The 23 year old player went under surgery recently, hoping to recover from the injury on time for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
Mikel Obi has decided to not take any chances and put his entire career at risk. Obi had been originally selected in Nigeria’s World Cup 2010 roster, and had even started practising with his national team that is currently in Durban. But it now seems that Mikel Obi’s injury is still pretty serious, so the young player decided to step back early and take the time to recover at his own pace. Nigeria’s coach Lars Lagerbäck has just 6 days to come up with a replacement, the deadline for any roster modifications is 24 hours before each team’s opening game, which for Nigeria is on June 12 against Argentina.
And on a side note, this is the third player from Chelsea missing the World Cup 2010 due to injuries, and with a possible fourth name coming up (Didier Drogba’s injury looks also very serious). Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and now John Obi Mikel have all been injured playing for Chelsea this season…
