Mikel, Essien of Chelsea injured before World Cup

Michael Essien of Ghana and John Obi Mikel of Nigeria are both playing for Chelsea, and both players are also going on the injury list less than 50 days before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The two African footballers are definitely missing the rest of the Premier League season with their club, and are now rushing to recover on time before the World Cup kicks off on June 11.

Michael Essien is on emergency training program and has just started doing some light walking again. The player already missed most of the 2010 African Cup of Nations with Ghana, and his recovery is so far full of unexpected complications. “If I can make it to the World Cup it would be amazing, but if not I still have my whole career ahead of me and this is important. The last thing I want to do is pressure myself to come back sooner and create even more problems. I recently started exercising again but the x rays show a few bruises, so I had to stop. My season with Chelsea is for sure over, I hope I can play for Ghana in South Africa“.

John Obi Mikel looks like is on a better situation than his team-mate, and on the way to the 2010 World Cup with Nigeria. The young midfielder got injured last week in a premiership match with Chelsea, but the doctors insist he will recover on time. “Fortunately the injury is not serious and he will be ready to help Nigeria this summer. Most likely Mikel will also manage to follow the team during the preparation stage even before the World Cup starts”.

The reports on Essien and Mikel are coming after last week’s news that another African player of Chelsea could also miss the World Cup due to injury. Didier Drogba is one of the biggest star players for the national football team of the Ivory Coast, but is having a groin strain problem that will probably keep him out of the tournament.
