It seems that June 4 has been the worst day for injuries so far, less than a week before the World Cup 2010 in South Africa begins. After Rio Ferdinand’s injury (that will definitely miss the World Cup) and Drogba’s broken arm, Italy is also now forced to add Andrea Pirlo to the injury list. Pirlo got injured during Italy’s friendly match against Mexico and will battle against time to be ready for the World Cup 2010 finals.
Andrea Pirlo injured his left calf muscle and has been sent back to Milan for more tests and until it is certain he could recover on time from the injury. Later on it will be decided if Pirlo’s injury is serious enough to keep the 31 year old player away from the entire World Cup 2010 tournament. Andrea Pirlo was the Most Valuable Player in the previous World Cup final for Italy, and is one of the most important team members and playmaker of the World Cup Champions.
Italy’s doctor Enrico Castellacci says that usually a recovery period of 2 to 3 weeks is needed for this type of injury: “Each player reacts differently when injured like that, for sure Pirlo’s injury worries me but we have enough time to see what we can do.” We remind you that if the Italian coach Marcello Lippi wants to do a last minute change to the team’s roster due to an injury, this needs to be done 24 hours before Italy’s opening World Cup game on June 14. So Pirlo has 9 days to prove that he can recover from his injury and will be able to help his national team later during the tournament, but most likely will miss the entire group stage.
