David Villa World Cup 2010 interview

by christine

After winning the Euro 2008 Spain is now aiming to complete the double and leave South Africa with the World Cup 2010 in their luggage (the last team to accomplish something similar was Germany in 1972 and 1974). Spain and head coach Vicente del Bosque are counting a lot on David Villa, and today Barcelona’s latest big transfer talks about everything and everyone in this exclusive interview.

“We definitely could have been playing in a much tougher group, but all teams will make our life harder because everyone wants to beat Spain. We don’t know much about the Honduras national team, but it’s a solid team that deservers to participate in the World Cup 2010. Switzerland is a younger team that plays a European style football. In my opinion the hardest team in the group is Chile if you take into consideration the impressive run and performances they had during the qualifying season. Chile is very dangerous in the front,” says Villa commenting on Group H and Spain’s opponents of the first stage.

Villa talks on the previous World Cup, as well as the successful Euro 2008 campaign: “In 2006 we started with a great 4-0 against Ukraine, and in general did very well during the group stage. Later on though we lost to France in the round of 16, and even though I scored 3 goals in the tournament I left with a bitter taste in my mouth. 2008 was fantastic for all of us, really helped us to change the mentality of the team because I think this is where we were lacking and not on football technique or abilities. Everybody knew we play great football but choke on all major competitions, we’ve been even accused of playing like we have already won the trophy. These are all in the past now, and it will stay like that for many years to come.”

David Villa also spoke about his partner in crime, Fernando Torres: “We have been playing together for a long time now, and what makes the difference is that we really have a great relationship. We are good friends so we are also great partners on the field, we have been proving this forever.”
