South Africa versus Uruguay

DATE: June 16 2010 CITY: Pretoria GROUP: Group A

The second day for Group A matches begins on June 16 with the battle between South Africa and Uruguay. Battle for the second qualifying position that is, and depending on the results from the first two games of the group this could get really interesting. If both South Africa and Uruguay lost their group openers against Mexico and France respectively, today’s game automatically becomes a matter of life and death. One more loss and the dream is over, you are out of the World Cup, even a tie will most likely not cut it at this point.

- Scenario A: Uruguay beats France while South Africa loses from Mexico.
The hosts cannot lose this game, they will have zero points while Uruguay is cruising all the way to the first place of Group A.

- Scenario B: South Africa won against Mexico but Uruguay got beaten by France.
The South Americans are with the back against the wall and they need to go all in and win this match up.

- Scenario C: One (or both) of the day one games was tied.
Regardless of the result of the second match, if we have a tie in the group it means that everything is still up for grabs. Even if one team has 3 points, two more will have 1 each, leaving the last team with 0 points. Everything could happen on day two and all positions in the group are within reach from every country.

- Scenario D: Both South Africa and Uruguay lost in the first World Cup game.
This is exactly what in football terms we call a “Game with no tomorrow”. You lose you are out of the tournament early, is as simple as that. A draw most likely will not help either unless you can win at the last group game, but even that sometimes is not enough.

- Scenario E: Both countries won their opening games.
In the highly unlikely event that South Africa and Uruguay have 3 points each, then the battle will be for securing a spot in the knock out games. Another victory automatically sends the winner to the second round, but the loser will still have some hopes left. A draw will be also good for both teams equally.
