UEFA President Michel Platini in a recent interview said that France has absolutely no hope of winning the trophy during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa this summer. Platini justifies his opinion on the fact that French coach Raymond Domenech has a problematic character, and he is holding the whole national team back with his attitude.
“He has a weird personality, but he is a great manager. And this is why I do not see France winning this World Cup tournament, even though they will qualify to the second round easily and play against Nigeria or Argentina. The French national team is not the greatest in the world right now, but definitely belongs in the category of teams that are hard to beat like Portugal or the Netherlands for example. France has some great units, but let’s be clear we don’t have the big star any more except maybe Thierry Henry.”
Michel Platini then went on to give his predictions for the 2010 World Cup: “My favourites are Brazil, Spain and England. They have the best squads and play fantastic football. I think right after I would select Italy, Germany and Argentina that are definitely able to go all the way also.
Michel Platini was one of the best football players for France and the whole world in the 80’s and has participated in three World Cup competitions. Platini won the 1984 European Championship with France where he was voted best player and top goal scorer (a record 9 goals that he still holds to this day). Michel Platini was the manager of the French national team for over four years, and had a key role in the organization of the 1998 World Cup finals hosted in France.
