Brad Pitt is now part of the official World Cup bid committee of the United States that is working on bringing back the major sporting event to the US. Pitt has formally accepted an invitation to join the United States World Cup bid committee, adding even more star power to the mix.
“Soccer is the absolute global sport and is a great honour for me to be part of this effort from the United States to organise the biggest sporting event in the world,” said Pitt in his official statement. Brad Pitt will join forces with former US President Bill Clinton, the Governor of the state of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, ex Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, the Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg, director Spike Lee and comedian Drew Carey that are also on the bid committee.
The United States have already hosted the World Cup tournament once in 1994, that was one of the most successful World Cup finals in history especially in terms of attendance. The United States bid is aiming for either the 2018 or the 2022 World Cup competitions, and will have to go head to head with England, Australia, Russia, Spain/Portugal, Netherlands/Belgium for both events, as well as South Korea, Japan and Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. FIFA will make a decision and select the new World Cup hosts on December 2 2010.
