Djibril Cissé: “I am very proud”

by christine

After a two year absence, Djibril Cissé is back in the French national team and coming to the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Cissé was there in 2002 and France’s disaster in Korea, but missed the 2006 World Cup due to an injury as well as the Euro 2008 two years later. But Cissé that always believed in himself managed to make a come back, and coach Domenech is counting on him to bring something new on the table for France this summer.

“I am very proud to be here,” said Cissé in his latest Le Monde interview. “Coming back to the French national team was definitely not a given, I had to work really hard to make it. Everybody saw me run, defend the ball, play the game for my team. And this is exactly what Raymond Domenech wants from his players, a strong will and the mentality of a winner. Karim Benzema is definitely paying for his bad reaction during the game against Romania last September, when he basically declared that he is not willing to give 100% for France in every game.”

And this is exactly how Djibril Cissé won a place in the French national team, Domenech was very clear: All selfish players are staying behind, no matter who you are. Djibril Cissé won and Benzema lost, as simple as that, it definitely makes a lot of sense for Domenech to take that direction. After a disappointing Euro 2008 he wanted to build his team around motivated players that are willing to sacrifice and do everything on the field, and not just take the big names that everyone expects to be there. All that’s left is to see if Djibril Cissé and the rest of the team will prove Domenech right during the World Cup 2010 finals.
