Germany will face England in the second round of the World Cup 2010 after beating Ghana by 1-0 in the Soccer City stadium of Johannesburg. The Black Stars of Ghana probably had the sweetest defeat in their history since they placed second in Group D, and are also advancing to the round of 16 despite losing their last game. The World Cup 2010 game between Ghana and Germany will also stay in history as the first World Cup match were two brothers played against each other, Jérôme Boateng for the Germans and Kevin-Prince Boateng for Ghana.
Germany needed the three points to advance (Ghana could qualify even with a draw), and attempted to take control of the game right from the start. The Germans had the overall ball possession, but only had one good chance during the first half of the match: Mesut Özil had a head-to-head with goalkeeper Richard Kingson but failed to score a goal for Germany. A minute later Ghana also lost a good opportunity with a close header from Asamoah Gyan that was stopped right on the goal line by Philipp Lahm.
The second half started with the same rhythm, and Germany was still looking for a goal that finally came in 60′ with a shot outside the penalty area by Özil. At that point Ghana had started to worry that maybe Serbia scores a goal in the other group match leaving them in third place. Ghana lost a couple of chances to score an equaliser with André Ayew, but when the news came in that Australia was up 2-0 the game started to really slow down. Ghana is also more lucky than Germany after placing second in Group D: they are going against the United States in the round of 16 instead of much stronger England that will face the Germans.
