In my opinion Group A is probably one of the toughest groups in the 2010 World Cup. Starting with the undisputed favourites France, world champions on the 1998 tournament, that have established themselves as one of the leading teams over the past few years. Les Bleus have always been a football powerhouse, from the time of Michel Platini and Alain Giresse that managed to go all the way to the semi-finals two times in a row (1982, 1986), but it was in the late 90′s and only after winning everything that the football team earned its reputation.
Mexico has successfully qualified for five consecutive World Cups, and they always advance to the second round after the group stage. The Mexican football team is hungry to go even further, they have reached the quarter finals twice already, but both times occurred in front of their home audience in Mexico. A fresh new team with lots of young talents playing together with some established big stars, Mexico is definitely able to go places this time around.
Being the tournament’s host is a great advantage and South Africa wants to make the best of it setting their expectations high. South Africa is one of the group’s outsiders, but you can bet they will compete at their top level for their supportive fans. Is the team ready to write the most significant chapter of their football history? Not an easy task for sure but anything could happen at this point, and a win in the opening game against Mexico will give them wings.
While Uruguay has a rich football past (has won the World Cup two times already), it is a young team still searching for a big run. But even though the glory days of the Uruguay football team are somehow fading, they still do have the resources and the experience to achieve greatness once again. With star players from Europe’s leading clubs and a coach that seems ready to impress the world, Uruguay could be the Cinderella and surprise of the finals.
