2010 is definitely the year of 3D with tons of new movies and products appearing on the market using 3D content, so the sporting event of the summer the World Cup in South Africa will also get a 3rd dimension. Sony as an official partner of the competition announced that is planning to cover at least 25 World Cup games with new 3D cameras, and will be available to fans all over the world in a variety of media such as a 3D Blue ray disk with match highlights, a 3D movie to be shown in theaters, as well as live broadcast in different cities for public viewing. For the few supporters of football (or soccer) in the USA sports channel ESPN is launching its 3D station with exclusive coverage of a World Cup game in June.
This is not however the first time football games have been broadcasted in 3D since Spanish media mogul Televisa already broke this record in 2009. And right now it looks like Sony and other similar companies are more interested in pushing this “new” technology as the next best thing in home entertainment. Electronic stores all over the world will soon be flooded with 3D televisions and DVD players, so the World Cup in South Africa is a great chance to test the waters. I haven’t seen any sports of any kind yet in 3D, and the technology is still new, but it seems like a great idea and almost everybody that had a chance to experience said they would never go back to two dimensions if they had the chance.
