The Times of London gave Argentina coach Diego Maradona another prestigious title yesterday, placing him in the first position as the best player of all time in the World Cup finals. England will never forget what Diego Maradona did in 1986 when he bluntly cheated against them, scoring a goal with his hand in the quarter-finals game between the two countries. The infamous “Hand of God” goal would later cost the tournament for England and of course further ignite one of the biggest rivalries in football history. Nevertheless the London Times - while looking at the bigger picture of course, choose Maradona as the biggest football player in the World Cup leaving behind him some pretty big names like Pelé. Let’s not forget though that in that same game of 1986 and just four minutes later Diego Maradona also scored “The Goal of the Century”, often claimed to be the greatest individual goal of all time, basically bypassing the entire English team with a 70 meter run.
This is the second recognition for Maradona from the London Times in the past couple of weeks. Recently the newspaper had another article about the World Cup with the top 50 goals scored in the tournament. Diego Maradona’s name appears in two of the top 3 spots, with “The Goal of the Century” being number one of course, and on the third position is Maradona’s last goal ever in the competition against Greece in 1994.
