Ledley King will be Rio Ferdinand’s replacement in England’s World Cup 2010 starting line up, and despite a career full of injuries the player says he will be ready to step up and help his national team. Ledley King has been plagued by chronic knee problems for many years now, and this injury is preventing him from playing more than one game a week with his club Tottenham. Since there is no other option or any experienced players to take over Rio Ferdinand’s position, it seems that King will have to tough it out during the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
“I will be ready to play on Saturday if my team needs me,” said King regarding England’s opening World Cup game against the United States. When asked if he could play during the entire World Cup 2010 tournament, Ledley King’s reply was “I want to believe that is possible, and I’m sure with the appropriate medical treatment I will be able to do it. The team’s doctors and our coach are allowing me to behave like any other player, this is really important for me. This season I was able to pick up the pace with Tottenham, I will be ready on Saturday no matter how many minutes I’m requested to play.”
“I am in pain every time I walk,” says Ledley King. “I know how sensitive my body is, and I feel I will get seriously hurt at one point. The worst part is the swelling and daily pain I need to go through after each game. I believe I can be in good condition and help England reach our goals, I have to.”
Ledley King then talked about his team mates Rio Ferdinand and John Terry: “I know John for many years now, he is very good at communicating inside the field and this is exactly what I need right now. I only practice 2 times a week so the time is really short, good communication can definitely make a difference in a situation like this. It is disappointing what happened to Rio Ferdinand, he will be here to support us though. Of course my first reaction was to be sad, he is a great friend and would have been the captain of the team.”
