A 64 year old South African collapsed and died today in Johannesburg while waiting in a queue to purchase tickets for the 2010 World Cup tournament. He was standing in line and under the sun for over 5 hours, waiting to be served while having number 565 in queue. Paramedics arrived almost immediately at the scene, only to pronounce him dead at around 7 am local time. Meanwhile reports coming in from South Africa say that in some cases people had to wait over 20 hours to purchase a magic ticket to the World Cup competition.
Football fans all over South Africa have been lining up since yesterday, after FIFA made available over 500,000 unsold tickets at a newly reduced price. People are now flocking in to witness in person and be part of the first World Cup in the African continent. Tickets will only be available for a few hours before switching back to an electronic sale system over the internet, something that most locals are not familiar with. These tickets can be purchased with cash in local malls and even supermarkets - the only way for most South Africans to obtain a seat during the sporting event.
Some ticket outlets also reported errors and technical issues that were stopping them from being able to print any tickets, while at the same time adding even more hours of waiting for people outside. FIFA officials announced that there was a massive demand this morning that brought down the entire system, something that is now fixed and ticket sales can continue as planned.
