The big upset against Spain – that Switzerland started the World Cup 2010 tournament with, did not have the appropriate ending for the Swiss that failed to qualify in the second round of the finals. Ottmar Hitzfeld and his team were unable to beat Honduras in their most crucial game of Group H, that was played in the Free State Stadium of Bloemfontein last night. Honduras got their first and only point in the 2010 World Cup, but did not manage to score a goal in any of the three matches played in South Africa.
Switzerland had the control of the game and overall ball possession during the first half, but was unable to really make anything out of it. Gökhan Inler’s shot in the eleventh minute barely missed the target, and six minutes later Eren Derdiyok lost the biggest chance for the Swiss during the 1st half against goalkeeper Noel Valladares. The first 45 minutes had one more good chance for Switzerland when Blaise Nkufo tried to give an assist instead of going full force to score a goal against the Honduras’ goalkeeper.
Honduras started the second half with a big chance, but David Suazo failed to score for his country with only Diego Benaglio left to beat. Benaglio made a fantastic save in 71′ against Edgar Álvarez, and Honduras finished the game (as well as the World Cup 2010) without scoring any goals.
