World Cup roster selection procedure

by admin

The FIFA official logoThe initial roster selections from most of the 2010 World Cup teams have started coming in, so this is a good time to review the official FIFA selection procedure for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. According to the official World Cup rules, all national teams are obliged to formally announce and give an initial player list to FIFA before the 11th of May 2010 – exactly one month before the World Cup begins. This list can have a roster of maximum 30 football players. The deadline for the final team roster is on June 1st 2010, and each national team is allowed to have 23 players in South Africa (exactly 23, not more or less).

After the announcement of the official team roster is made, a player cannot be replaced unless injured. In case of an injury the team manager can select and invite a new player to the World Cup, even if the name of that player was not in the initial squad of the 30 internationals. This procedure must be completed at least one day before the opening game of the interested team in the 2010 World Cup. So for example the deadline for France is on June 10 2010 since they play their first match on the 11th. Spain starts the group stage on the 16th, so the last day to replace an injured player will be on the 15th of June.
