Polokwane means the “City of Safety” but it is known and recognised by its old name Pietersburg. Located between beautiful mountains and vast green grasslands, Polokwane is also famous for the Baobab tree, one of the biggest and most impressive trees in the world that is native to Africa. A major urban centre and capital city of the whole area, Polokwane has half a million inhabitants and is situated almost 1300 meters above sea level in the northern part of the country.
Polokwane is one of the hottest spots in the world for ecotourism offering easy access to many different natural reserves and wildlife viewing. Rare bird species, crocodile farms and native plants such as the Cycads are just some of the various possibilities available in the area. The city is also known as the premier hunting destination in South Africa. Other popular tourism areas include Makapan’s Cave, Lake Fundudzi, Ndebele Village and the Thathe Vondo Forest. And of course the Meropa Casino and Entertainment World offers access to various restaurants, bars and clubs with traditional South African music and food.
Only four games will be played in Polokwane for the World Cup 2010, all in the Group stage. The 45,000 seats Peter Mokaba Stadium is located right next to the old Pietersburg Stadium just 5 kilometres out of the city centre and a 10 minute drive from the Gateway International Airport.
