Photo of JohannesburgJohannesburg (also known as the City of Gold) is the largest city in South Africa, and one of the top 40 metropolitan cities in the world with over 10 million inhabitants. Actually Johannesburg is the biggest city on the planet that is not located next to a river, lake or the sea since Johannesburg is located in the eastern area of South Africa at an elevation of 1,752 meters. Apart from being the absolute center for South African business and commerce, Johannesburg also has over 2000 parks like the Johannesburg Botanical Garden, tons of interesting museums including the Apartheid Museum, art galleries, theaters and is just 50km away from The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site. The biggest airport in the city is the OR Tambo International Airport (formerly Johannesburg International Airport), the hub of South African Airways the largest international and domestic airline. Johannesburg is definitely missing a convenient public transportation system, and most residents depend on taxis to move around (metered or minibus taxis).

Even though South Africa has one of the worst crime rates in the world, drastic measures have been taken to reduce crime in the city of Johannesburg. CCTV cameras are now installed in every corner of every road that has proven to be very effective. The average response time by police is under 60 seconds in the central business district. The South African government in preparation for the 2010 World Cup has spent another 3 Billion dollars to fight crime, and has even enlisted the former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani to assist.

There are 2 stadiums in Johannesburg hosting games for the 2010 Fifa World Cup: Ellis Park Stadium and Soccer City Stadium. Both the tournament’s opening game as well as the World Cup final will be held in Johannesburg, a total of 15 matches are played in the city throughout the competition.
