With lots of beautiful beaches and some of the friendliest people in South Africa, Durban is a very welcoming and relaxing city. Durban is the third largest city in South Africa (with almost 3.5 million inhabitants), a major tourism destination, as well as one of the busiest ports in all of Africa. According to prehistoric art found in various caves around Durban, it is thought that the first people to be established here arrived from the north around 100,000 BC making Durban one of the oldest cities in the world. Some of the attractions found in Durban include The Golden Mile (most popular beach front and promenade), Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World (that also houses many restaurants, bars and cinemas), the Amanzimtoti area, and uShaka Marine World (5th largest aquarium in the world).
Durban was mainly developed as a vacation destination for South African residents coming from Johannesburg, and is only second in terms of tourism to the city of Cape Town but still to this day remains more popular among local tourists. Durban also plays the role of a gateway to the Zulu Kingdom and interested tourists can live and experience the Zulu culture from up close. Both domestic and international flights are available at the Durban International Airport, which services around four million passengers each year.
A total of seven Fifa World Cup games will be held in Durban including a semi-finals match, all in the newly built Moses Mabhida Stadium. Durban is home to two South African Premier Soccer League teams, Maritzburg United and the Golden Arrows.
